Tony is an accomplished and trusted advisor having collaborated with boards and executives to address current challenges and manage risk of future related issues. His expertise is specialized in strategic compensation design, including exceptional circumstances driven by mergers and acquisitions like retention and succession as well as total rewards design. Tony plays a significant role in Global Governance Advisors’ (“GGA”) executive and director compensation, total rewards and board governance practice, where he leverages his extensive knowledge and over 15 years of experience to drive results. In addition, he plays a lead role in GGA’s Proxy disclosure practice working with some of the largest TSX-listed companies, as well as those newly listed via prospectus and after the initial public offering, to improve disclosure to better align with shareholder’s needs and expectations.

Tony also leads GGA’s most significant research initiative with over 10 years experience as an accomplished corporate governance researcher, analyst, and author. GGA partnered with The Globe and Mail to provide the research expertise and support for their Board Games annual publication which is a comprehensive ranking of corporate boards among the largest Companies in Canada. Tony engages with issuers and works with The Globe and Mail to support guideline updates that align with shareholder expectations. Through this partnership, Tony has helped GGA rise to a leadership position in Canada on Proxy disclosure to address challenges with meeting your shareholder’s needs and expectations. Tony plays a crucial role in GGA’s overall success.

Background & Affiliations

Tony was previously a Senior Research Officer at the David & Sharon Johnston Centre (Johnston Centre) for Corporate Governance Innovation at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Between 2010 and 2019, he was the Lead Researcher at the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management’s Clarkson Centre for Board Effectiveness. Tony’s work focused on the study of corporate governance incorporating board practice, policy, behaviours as well as board and executive compensation. He was also a Statistician and Adjunct Consultant with Quantum Governance L3C, an advisory firm in the USA that delivers a range of corporate governance and strategy services to credit unions and non-profit organizations. In this role he provided the senior team with guidance on board surveys and analysis, conducted director interviews and drafted corporate governance assessment reports.

Tony played a crucial role overseeing the Johnston Centre’s data collection that supported the Globe and Mail’s annual Board Games publication which is a comprehensive ranking of Canada’s corporate boards. Tony led the Board Games research assistant team responsible for collecting over 100,000 governance data points, engaged with representatives of the S&P/TSX Composite Index listed companies ranked in Board Games, and fostered relationships with stakeholders and project partners involved with the annual research.
